Remote Authentication Dial In User Service - RADIUS

Internet Authentication Server, IAS, is Microsoft's inplementation of RADIUS.

When you use RADIUS for authentication, the dial-up client requests authentication from the remote access server, and the remote access server forwards the authentication request to the RADIUS server. The RADIUS server then authenticates the dial-up user, who is then granted access to the network as defined in the remote access policy.

The remote access server does not authenticate the dial-in user; it forwards the request for authentication to the RADIUS server.

The RADIUS server does not forward the request for authentication to the remote access server; it receives the request for authentication from the remote access server.

The client dialing in to the remote access server is not a RADIUS client; the remote access server is a RADIUS client. The remote access client does not request authentication; it forwards requests for authentication.

The RADIUS server does not request authentication; it receives requests for authentication.
